Shelby Hurst is the media coordinator for the Michigan Geological Survey, where she has worked since 2020. She additionally oversees staff production of online content across all of the survey’s social media platforms.
Shelby received both of her degrees from Western Michigan University. Her Master of Science in Geosciences research focused on regional climate modeling using extensive analysis of hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes in rain and snow in SW Michigan, while her Bachelor of Science in Geochemistry involved a variety of research in both quantitative determination of adsorption of heavy metals on minerals, and the effects of nutrients and road salts in surface waters in SW Michigan. She has a strong passion for public education of the geosciences, having taught at many levels from K-12 outreach with CoreKids, to collegiate as both a lab coordinator at WMU and adjunct professor at Grand Rapids Community College.
