Thomas (Tom) Valachovics is a senior research associate at the Michigan Geological Survey (MGS) at Western Michigan University. Tom leads the MGS aggregate mapping grant funded by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. His research interests include Quaternary stratigraphy, glacial geology, geomorphology, hydrogeology of glacial sediments, and Quaternary geochronology. Tom uses his expertise in glacial geology to map landform distribution and glacial deposition throughout Michigan. These mapping efforts help to locate and understand the distribution of aggregate and groundwater resources in the state. Before joining the MGS, Tom spent time at both the Ohio Geological Survey and Indiana Geological and Water Survey where he worked on a variety of projects involved with mapping the glacial geology in the Great Lakes Region. Tom earned a B.S. in Geology from Grand Valley State University working with MGS contract mapper Pat Colgan and earned a M.S. in Geology from the University of Toledo.
