Education and Outreach

Outreach Mission

The Michigan Geological Survey’s outreach efforts aim to make Michigan’s geological information easily accessible to the public. They seek to increase awareness and understanding of Michigan’s geological resources, promoting responsible stewardship and ensuring widespread access to this valuable knowledge. We accomplish this through a range of outlets– video and written content, visits and tours of our facility, and participation in educational events.

Online Content

Our video production team works hard to deliver a variety of geological content for both the general public and geologic students and professionals. You can find well informed and detailed videos on subjects such as Michigan meteorites, the geology of select state parks, and guides for water well owners on our YouTube channel.

K-12 Outreach

The Michigan Geological Survey is dedicated to providing K-12 outreach to Michigan students, teachers and schools. Our mission is to provide educational resources on the geology and natural resources of Michigan that are aligned to the Michigan K-12 Science Standards. Our tailored modules cover diverse topics such as Michigan's Geological History, Michigan fossils and fossilization processes, rock and mineral identification, groundwater use, and more, providing engaging resources to inspire young learners to appreciate and protect the state's geological treasures for future generations.

General Public Outreach

We offer a range of educational resources for the general public. You can often find us at local mineral shows, university events, national conferences, and other various community events across the state. We participate in these forms of outreach in order to provide people with well researched data and explanations for their geological questions.
