Michigan Advances Geologic Hydrogen Research with New State Investment

Michigan has taken a significant step toward evaluating its potential geologic hydrogen resources, with state leaders announcing a $7.5 million investment to support exploration and research into naturally occurring hydrogen. The funding is intended to help reduce one of the biggest barriers identified by state agencies: limited subsurface data needed to determine whether commercially viable hydrogen resources exist in Michigan.
The announcement aligns with findings from the Michigan Geological Survey’s recent report, Hydrogen in Michigan: Synthesis of State Agency Findings and the Strategic Role of the Michigan Geological Survey, which concludes that Michigan has favorable geology for geologic hydrogen, particularly within the Michigan Basin and Midcontinent Rift system, but that significant scientific and technical work is needed before the state’s resource potential can be fully understood.
The report summarizes findings from EGLE, the Michigan Public Service Commission, the Michigan Infrastructure Office, and the Department of Natural Resources. Across all agencies, a common theme emerged: Michigan’s hydrogen opportunity could offer substantial long-term economic, industrial, and environmental benefits, but progress depends on resolving key uncertainties related to geology, infrastructure, regulation, and resource governance.
The Michigan Geological Survey is playing a central role in this effort through ongoing research that includes Precambrian core analysis, regional seismic evaluation, geologic mapping, and laboratory testing designed to better understand hydrogen generation, migration, accumulation, and storage potential in Michigan.
