About CoreKids
CoreKids utilizes the unique geological resources of the Michigan Geological Survey (MGS) to bring real Earth Science education to K-12 students. CoreKids’ fundamental mission is to increase awareness and understanding of Earth, its processes, and its natural resources. Michigan-specific resources include geologic history, fossils, watersheds, and many other topics. CoreKids provides programming to schools and non-profit organizations without charge.
CoreKids Educational Resources
Educational resources include MGS-authored content, in addition to recommended content from partners and other institutions.
Fossils Tell a Story: five lessons about fossils and Michigan geology designed for elementary age students. Lessons are fully supported with slides, handouts, and reference materials. Students will be able to understand what fossils are, how they are formed, what they can tell us about life on Earth, and how we can use fossils to understand Michigan’s geologic history.
Additional Resources
CoreKids offers field trips to the MGS Repository, Western Michigan University’s Schmaltz Museum and Dino Park, and the WMU Asylum Lake field station. As scheduling permits, we may be able to schedule classroom visits or school visits for events like Science Nights or other events that allow us to promote earth science. School visits should offer opportunities for contact with larger groups than in a single classroom.
