Every single rock is different from every other rock. Rocks are different ages, different sizes, and made of different minerals. But some rocks are really different! They have characteristics that are truly unique. These rocks might behave in very un–rock-like ways which gives even more information about their history and their unique uses.
The MGS Weird Rocks informational content is inspired in part by the book “Weird Rocks” by Michele Corriel published in 2013. If you are interested in weird rocks, this content includes a slide deck highlighting many of the rocks in the book, and additional links on rock classification. Two classroom lessons are included that feature hands-on activities for teaching the rock cycle and rock classification.
MGS staff is available for public outreach events with the Weird Rocks collection and more. Our Weird Rocks collection is also available for you to check out!
